Thankfully, Loudmouth soup are a much more interesting proposition, not least because ‘Skydiver’ sounds like a remix of the theme to TV’s ‘Steptoe and Son’ sung by ‘The Bluetones’.
The sound of banjos infiltrates the country air, although this is just one of a range of weird and wonderful instruments cloying for attention throughout the two songs on offer.
‘Narcolepsy’ includes slide guitar and a Dylanesque vocal, suggesting Loudmouth Soup have run amok in a classic folk-rock museum.
They’re too intricate, clever and off-kilter to appeal to the mainstream Leeds pop circuit, but all the better for being off-the-wall, round the twist and altogether missing the point. In my world, sticking to the point is over-rated and this EP is served up with some style.
If you plan your nights out far enough in advance then pencil in Loudmouth soup’s gig at the Packhorse, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, on Saturday July 10.
